    Yes, that one should work, but it's an OBD2 type code reader.

    It'll work on pretty much every car since 2004, and quite a few going back to '96, but in most cases, only on petrol BMWs from 2001, and BMW Diesels from 2004.

    It'll read basic codes for engine problems, give live data of sensor values, but it won't be able to communicate with Airbags or ABS systems for example.

    If you have a laptop, you'd be better off buying any ELM327 lead off ebay and using that. Far cheaper, and loads of different software packages that do the same.

    Anything that calls itself ELM327 will work, it's a spec, rather than a manufacturer, and don't worry about buying stuff from China, i've never known anyone to get messed about by the Chinese, just postage takes about 1-2 weeks.
