Hi guys, I am new here so be gentle. I am obviously not an idiot because I have read the idiots guide to INPA and have no idea what it's all about. It appears to me I need to buy a lead, some software, possibly a 16 to 20 pin adapter and an old laptop to get an 232 port. Now I might be wrong but this sounds a tad expensive and also with so many bits from different sources no one will offer help as they will all blame some other part of the system not supplied by them,
Now to my question ! Is there available a simple code reader/ reset tool that works for all the cars systems? If so where do I get one and at what cost? I only want to be able to diagnose faults before sending the car to the garage, reset service stuff, and turn off things like the airbag light which I seem to have acquired recently. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks, Bob.

    Hi Bob
I have the same car as you and run inpa,DisV.57 and SSS all off the same pc running a 64 bit version of windows, inpa will run straight on the machine and the other 2 run on a virtual machine,i got 2 leads, the newer style one, a 16-20 pin older style theat plugs in under the bonnet and all the software for £45 and its already paid for itself as i reset my airbag light. if your interested let me know and i'll send you the link of the person i bought from.
    Matt.

To answer the direct question, no there isn't a handheld code reader for the EU E36 that I know of.

Thanks Matt, as it appears there is no simple plug and play reader I would be interested to know where you got your system. How difficult was it to load the software needed and how simple is it to use? I am not especially good with computers if I need to load software or make changes to it.
    Thanks, Bob.

I use one of these Peake Research tools on my older BMW's Reset and Scan Tools for BMW Check-Engine, SRS, Oilservice Inspection

It doesn't do the airbags, but is very simple to use and gives the proper fault codes for BMW models..... They come up on Ebay sometimes cheaply...
