edber, i have come across a similar situation with my car, I have a 2003 325 xi that is showing many issues similar to yours. I salvaged a lcm from another e46 and am curious what your outcome was with the programs. Were you able to alter the vin and erase the tamper dot? if so which software did you use? I have read PASoft allows you to adjust the vin, in this thread the other ppl mentions sss or Tool Set 32

    Thanks

Ah yes mate,i bought pa soft 1.4 and sorted the lcm in 5 minutes.
Just google E46 LCM CODING and Click on THREAD:HOW TO CODE A USED LCM WITH PASOFT/BMW SCANNER and you will see a zip file.
Open the file and it gives very detailed instructions.
