I have just had my car in for a diagnostic test as is has been spluttering and the codes came up were 274e and 2744 can anyone tell me what these codes are. the guy in the garage said that there was no information on his system for these numbers. The mechanic took one listen to the engine and was very sure that it needed new plugs and and new coil as it wasn't firing on all cylinders, does this sound about right for these codes.

also when i first start the car there is a small amount of smoke only just noticeable and burning smell (sometimes smells waxy, i know it sounds odd or it's just my nose) coming from the back of the engine but once the engine has been running for a couple of minutes this stops and that's it for the rest of the day, only seem to happen when the engine is cold, do you think the above problems has anything to do with this problem.

    274E Code
    Combustion Fail-Multiple Misfires
    2744 Code
    Combustion Fail-Cylinder 4 detected
As both codes have been stored the misfiring occured at the same time

My magic PC is telling me to check:
    Crank Sensor
    Ignition Coils
    Fuel Injector
and Knock control (which will be very unlikely)

Hope this helps a bit mate.

Test the resistance in the coil to see if the coil is broken. New plugs though and a coil if required.

I,m going to change my spark plugs and change the coil. Do you think this problem will have any connection to the smoke and the smell. and can you recommend good spark plugs . Thanks

    NGK plugs mate
Make sure you get a decent quality coil, a Bosch if possible. Avoid Bremi coils as BMW used to have problems with them.
If its mis-firing it could cause some smoke as you are not getting complete combustion

there is only some smoke from the back of the engine, when i first start the car in the morning from cold, once it's warmed up it's fine no more smoke, and when i say smoke there is not really that much, but smoke and engines don't really go do they.

    Thanks

I would also be checking for any air leaks from split hoses, split vacuum pipes, split engine breather pipes or split induction pipes, also any valves and diaphragms that may have failed. Any air that is sucked into the engine should travel past the Air flow meter otherwise it will give you a running fault.
