hi, can anyone chip in with what handheld diagnostic tool definately works with an e46 316 - I dont want to buy one and it don't read the codes! As I hear of this happening quite a bit.

What units do you guys own? Im looking to spend around £50.

    Thanks in advance

Be patient my friend . It's been 3 hours since you posted your original request. People are probably back to work so you may get some answers later on during the day or evening.

Ive just bought this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001LHXTO0 Autel Maxiscan 509, it comes in a that price with delivery.

mine is an e46 325ti sport though not a 316 so cant guarantee but there is a review from some one with an e46 m3 and it worked for them and gives bmw oem codes. so im hoping it will do the same for mine and should yours too.
I had a £25 gift voucher to chip in towards its so it brought the price down for me but still not bad for that price

    hope this helps

depends if you want generic engine codes or the more comprehensive BMW codes...

generic code handhelds for basic engine faults with some live data capability a U381 is cheap and does the job..

they only read engine codes they DO NOT read transmission and drivetrain, chassis,or bodywork systems or trouble codes..
330i sport a big chunk of berlin...

Interesting that this thread never continued. I am searching for a decent BMW diagnostic tool that does more than the generic chinese machines. What would be current thoughts?

I was also going to search for the best pairings between software and reader, and software that resets basics like oil service when its been done etc.

INPA (do a search on here) for cheap, fully comprehensive but rather involved diagnostics, and C110 scanner for quick plug and play (lazy style - like me ) but not quite as comprehensive.
Built in Regensburg with spanners not chopsticks - Bavarian muscle - Speed & Power
