    Hi guys. Newbie here.
I drive a Blue 318i Automatic Coupe 2001, and i like ice cream.

Just wandering if anyone can help me.
The Engine management light has been on in my dash for almost a year and i though it was time to sort it out.

I dont wanna take it to the garage because i cant realy afford it.
I was going to try and fix it myself.

I need to buy a scanner/reader. I dont know very much about them.

*Does anyone know what type will work on my car?
*Also where can i find out what the codes mean?
*Do differant scanners/readers do differant jobs?
*Are there any good books on repair & diagnostics for my car?
*Where can i buy the scanner/reader and how much should i pay?
*Also when idle'ing it jumps between 0.4 & 0.9 RPM and shudders. (Someone said this could be the air pressure switch)

    Thanks in advance peeps.

Depends on the scanner you buy really! We have error codes here EOBD trouble codes/fault codes P0100 - P0999 alternatively post up whatever error codes you have and we will try and decipher them

A diagnostic from a BMW indy should be about £30 so is probably cheaper than buying a code reader yourself.

Where do you live as there may be a member living near you who is willing to read the codes for you, I have for people before

Im in liverpool mate. I went to a BMW specalist yesterday and he quoted me £115.00 + VAT to change x2 hose's & a sensor and clear the engine management light.

I asked him if that would cure the rough idleing problem and he said "it would help" so basicaly im not getting any garuntee's, i can just see myself paying out again, and again.

I think buying my own reader is the way to go. But if anyone in the Merseyside area can help me out that would be grate.

I also need to reset the OIL SERVICE warning. I had the oil changed less that 12 months ago but the guy didnt reset the Oil Service history.

So im looking for a reader that will clear my engine management light & reset the oil service history.. What one should i get?

    thanks

ps.. Ian.. you can get readers on ebay for £40.00. Dunno what one to get though or if it will do what i want.

It seems that "Carsoft" is the way to go but its £300.00!!!

The "Peake" reader seems ok but you need a separate one for the Airbag/SRS codes.
