    Hi,

Does anyone know what SW / HW configuration I would need to read when the last successful DPF "cycle" occured? I do have a bluetooth based ELM327 (might be a 1.0 clone), but I've not got any SW for it yet.

I am planning to do pretty much all the maintenance myself on the vehicle, so being able to read and reset fault codes would be useful for when something does go wrong.

The vehicle is a late 2007 (LCI) 535d tourer, and I also have a 2008 520d tourer which I'd like to be able to use the same diagnostic equipment with, if at all possible to save on costs.

Any suggrestions or pointers would be much appreciated.

By the way, the reason I'm interested in the DPF in particular is that both cars are being used mainly for short journeys of 10 - 15 minutes or so, which I understand is not ideal as the DPF's don't get chance to burn off frequently. Now and again we go on longer journeys, but I'd like to actually be able to confirm how long it's been since the last "burn off".

    Thanks,
    James.

For your car you would need BMW DIS 5.7 (the latest version that is "freely" available on the internet) and a K-CAN cable to go with the BMW head software

    Thanks,

Is this the right cable: INPA K+DCAN Cable
I've had a look for DIS 5.7 in some places, but so far only found 5.3. I'll keep looking.

That is the cable but you should be able to buy the kit with software as well. If not there are a few download sites but it is a bit messy as you need to install vmware on your machine

I found a website offering software with a cable: BMWCable, but they state on their webpage that the KCAN protocol is only used until March 07, so wouldn't be any use for my cars (Nov 07 and 2008). Does that mean that I need to get a cable that supports DCAN as well as KCAN? Or is it the case that the cable is the same, it's just the driver that supports two different protocols (KCAN and DCAN)?

Also, I currently run a couple of VMWare virtual machines on my pc, so adding another one would not be a problem - are you saying that the downloads are complete vmware images (operating system and all), or are you recommending installing the downloaded software on a virtual machine (presumably as protection against trojans in the software)?

    Thanks,
    James.

The software is a basically a bootleg version of the GT1 workshop "pad" that BMW turn a blind eye to, and so all that is availble on the market is a VM image and not the original install disks, hence why you need VMware on your machine. You are right you do need D-CAN from 2007 but as you say I believe (but could be wrong) the cable is the same, but the head (driver) is different. One of our mapping vendors theEnd knows this stuff really well, I suggest you drop him a quick PM
