Having had an early Mk4 Golf a while ago I still have the serial port VAG-COM lead I used to use with that car to talk to the ECU.
From what I have read it is possible to modify the vagcom lead to talk to an E46 - but I can't see any links as to how to modify the lead, could someone point me in the right direction?
Also, given that it was a '98 Golf, the lead I used was (in VW parlance) a single K-line lead. This worked with earlier cars, but later ones needed a dual k-line lead... Any idea what the BMW will need? Or if the lead I have is suitable?
OK, another probably stupid question; which software do I use with the modified lead? I can't imagine VAG-COM works and I have read about INPA (?) and carsoft but neither seem to be mentioned in the same context as VAG-COM...
Given that I want to be able to interrogate the ECU(s) as well as possibly updating it/them (mainly to update the Head Unit once I have installed the iPod interface) does this sound feasible? I know a trip to the dealer will get these set, for a fee, but I would rather have the possibility to do other stuff later on...
Any help appreciated,
