Got a 3 year old 118i about a year ago and am still paying the ongoing bills.

Latest: The control unit in the steering column failed so today I paid a few hundred quid for a new column because they apparently dont sell new control units without a whole steering column.

My garage also told me that I need a software update, costing another £300, otherwise ''other things may go wrong''. Im not a technical person and what I dont understand is that presumably when BMW manufactured the car, the software that they installed was suitable for the equipment fitted. Why should I need new sofware if the car hasnt changed??

Is my garage correct - is this just another aspect of BMW's post sale revenue generating scheme? Wish I'd kept my beautiful old classic Saab 900 turbo!

Any thoughts or guidance (other than flogging the car) welcomed!

300 quid!!, i paid 75 for the latest DDE updates on mine.

Has the car been serviced at the dealers? if so any updates would have been installed by them at service time nayway

Thanks. Its not a main dealer, but a place that specialises in BMWs. So is what they told me about needing a new steering column for a failed control unit true? Still dont understand why a software update is needed all!
