Im using Vista. Laptop is 64 bit which might not help.

Have I got connection sequence right? eg 1)plug in to Car & Laptop 2)turn ignition from off to position 1 or 2 3)open up ScanTools
I've never used Vista... but it sounds to me like the com thing isn't working for you.

    To change port settings
To open Device Manager, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager
    Double-click Ports (COM & LPT).
Right-click the port for which you want to change settings, and then click Properties.
On the Port Settings tab, make the desired changes.

This is where I made Com 1 the virtual USB port, and then set the Scantool software to Com 1 also. Worked first time.

Tried to connect with the following, with no success:-

    -a 32 Bit Windows laptop
    -Windows XP
    -different versions of ScanTools

I'm going to play with the port settings as you suggest. If this fails I will try different software - maybe EasyOBD and ScanXL.

    Can you just tell me:-
Whats the Baud Rate setting supposed to be - is it 38,400 ?
What position should the ignition key be in - position 1? (Is that when the key is one-away from the 'off' position ?

    Many thanks

Ive made some progress. Am now connecting having set laptop to work on Com 1 as you suggested. But it doesnt work on Baud 9800, just on 38500. However, another problem now - the first time I connected was fine, but subsequently ScanTools 1.15 is telling me I have a cloned copy of ELM327, that ScanTools doesnt support this, and it wont open.

Any way around this? Maybe an older version of Scan Tools. Ive tried EasyOBD and it doesnt work.

    All sorted? Hope so

Basically there is an issue with newer versions of Scantool & the ELM327 - so an older version always comes in handy. I know it's not all-singing all-dancing, but it's a good code reader & you get the basics live.

    Hi all,

I have a similar issue. Have the elm327 usb converter interface and trying to use scantool.

The drivers are all installed fine, and i have set the com port to 1 on the device manager as well as the scantool software.

Following the sequence of connect, turn ignition to position 1 or 2, then fire up scantool.

It gives me the message that it cant find the interface, or isnt responding etc.

I have also tried it with obd11 spy, and have a similar issue - it finds the port, but cannot connect to the interface.

im pretty sure the tool is OK, i get a static red LED, then when i plug it in it flickers green and orange, then settles back on a static red.

    any thoughts!?!
