Does the ELM327 OBD2 Scanner tool (http://www.amazon.co.uk/ELM327-Based.../dp/B001C1QQJA) work with the BMW 3 Series. It says it should. But when I plug it in I just get "device not responding" ie. there's no communication between laptop and car (320D 54 plate). Can someone advise. Many thanks.

Did you turn your ignition onto position 1 or 2?

I just had a look at the Ad and to be honest you not really going to get a quality code reader for £24.That would just about cover the cost of the interface so what I would do is keep the interface and upgrade the software or get a peake tool which is much better suited to BMW's.
Either that or try reloading the software and see what happens

I have the ELM 327 scanner and run it with Scantool software & it works perfectly. You need to have the ignition on - preferably start the car. The LED's on the ELM327 should light up whether connected to a computer or not.

Is your computer definitely recognising the ELM327? it's a serial device, so you need you may need to install a serial-to-usb driver on your laptop.

I did this, then right click on "my computer", go into "device manager", then "ports" - I assigned the USB to port 1, then it worked perfectly.

    100% works with my E46.

I think the laptops recognising it. In Device Manager it seems to be called 'USB Serial Converter" under 'USB Controllers'. I dont know how to allocate it to port 1, it doesnt seem to give me that option. With scantool.net ive been able to allocate it to Com 3 (and ive tried it with some other com ports as well with no success)

BMW diesels are notorious they use a different connection protocol to the petrols most cheap scanners wont work with earlyish BMW diesels..

the OBD11 part means nothing you need to check if it supports the protocol used by your car there is various different types....
330i sport a big chunk of berlin...

I assume scantool boots up ok, and doesn't give you a "port cannot be read" message? What OS are you using (XP works for me). Scantool should allow you to choose between post 1 & 8 - it's just a matter of allocating your virtual USB port to one of those COM ports.

Where abouts in the country are you? I'll help if I can.

    Im in N.Wales.

I can open up ScanTools okay but when I clik on 'sensor data' it just says "Port Status:Com3 ready (device not responding)".

Im using Vista. Laptop is 64 bit which might not help.

Have I got connection sequence right? eg 1)plug in to Car & Laptop 2)turn ignition from off to position 1 or 2 3)open up ScanTools
