I have recently bought my first bm and after having a look at the reciepts from bmw services i have confirmed that i propose to do most of the servicing myself.
I am deciding upon which diagnostic reader/reseter to get. I have downloaded carsoft 6.1 sp4 as i was able to get it for free. I am unsure as to what cables to buy. I have a 2004 316ti es. Any help or direction much appreciated. I May also need a PCMCIA card adapter for a serial connection as i believe usb is tempermental.
Is there any other cheap alternatives? Thanks

Was this the method you were thinking off?

    Oil service - e46 2001 318ci

As long as you get a USB to Serial converter based on the FTDI chipset you should be fine. Version 6.5 sp2 is floating around on the web.

BMW specific error codes, reads airbag and ABS. Just use it for reading modules and don't try activating anything with it.
