If you are getting oil on the plugs, it's probably time to do the rocker cover gasket and spark plug gaskets. They come as a set and are about £35 from BMW 11120030496. It's only one engine layer below the plugs so shouldn't take too long to do. While you are there take some pictures of the cam chain and its tensioner. The extension on the tensioner hydraulic ram will indicate how stretched the chain is and if it needs replacing soon.

Can I do that without having to change the oil again? I only did it just over a week ago and it cost £50

Yes you can. This is how deep you are going. No oil spilled.

Thanks NealP, I have put in a request there also for a price. Does anyone know if the BMW Bosch plugs have any issues? I have heard the NGK ones are better but the engine should still run ok with the Bosch ones supplied?

www.bmminiparts.com can do the gaskets for £33.20 delivered so we will see what Hereford does.

Only update is that I tried the engine again just now, exactly the same issue with running rough and then settling again once the idle has dropped. More noticeable smell of unburnt fuel though.

Really am close to throwing in the towel on this car now

Gasket arrived this morning, weather is nice so I will crack on soon. However, manual refers to using Drei Bond 1209 on the gasket around the vanos unit. Obviously I dont have any of this and apparently it is unavailable from dealers now too. Will this do the job? Clicky
