    I'm considering investing in this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-EngineChec...item255e9ad279

It says 2001+ for petrol and 2004+ for diesel, the reasoning being: http://www.gendan.co.uk/article_1.html

My question is, despite my car being made in 03/2003, will it work despite the 2004 claim, as I believe my car is OBDII compliant?

    Any feedback is appreciated, thanks.

Much better to pay a bit extra and get one of these as they are BMW specific and not just OBD http://www.motormec.co.uk/diagnostic.html

I have used the gendan one on a lexus before and it was a good bit of kit for the money, and I could see the live data in a graph form. But the peake tool will give you more options and BMW specific codes which the gendan tool wont...

I use a lot of diag equipment at work, but the first thing I use for quick code reads on BMW is the peake tool...

    Thanks for that

Although I would like access to real time engine/sensor data too on laptop, so the Peake is more BMW friendly with details, however doesn't provide the real time data ... looks like I may need to buy two

Thats the only downfall with the peake reader. I tend to read the codes with that and if there is more to it, or I need live data a use a Bosch KTS540.
A lot of members on here swear by Carsoft as they read BMW specific codes and live data. I personally would steer clear of anything thats just OBD as they just dont go into enough detail and unless the emissions are affected, they miss codes.....

It wasn't until you mentioned it that I found the limitations of the OBD interface, so thanks again

I've got a page with some info on about different diagnostic kit

    http://www.endtuning.com/scantools.html

As Steve says, there's no harm in asking before buying!
