Ok so the latest update. I finally admitted defeat and shipped it off to the local indy.
After some trial and error we have narrowed the problem down to the DME.
The basic test was to plug in a donor DME and not observe the intermittent on/off EML and engine light. Car even ran with the donor DME and donor EWS.
So next step was to swap the chip from the old DME to the new DME. This didn't work and we ended up frying the replacement DME.
So it seems that there's a coupl of choices:
1) go with a replacement DME/EWS combo
2) try some sort of reflash of either DME/EWS
Can anyone offer advice on option 2):
* what tools are required to generate ews/dme dumps? (I have INPA v5 and DIS v44)
* once I have the dumps can I manipulate them
* how do I then write the manipulated files
* if I can get a virgin DME dump for my ECU how do I flash it?
DME EWS combo might be better, although you'd need all your old keys added to the new EWS, which should be possible in DIS/CIP
Inpa or DIS doesn't read the chips as far as i know, just various parts of the data on them.
To get the info off, you'd need to unsolder the chips and read them.
What you can do is have the Original ECU read via BDM, which will read all of the chips / memory on the ecu and program a replacement as a clone.
If you get a virgin dump (very rare) you should be able to program the car with SSS.
Can you give me some more pointers on BDM?
What sort of kit is needed to do this?
I've got an INPA 5 and DIS 44 install and I think this has progman SSS on it too. Is it possible to read/write the whole chip with progman SSS?
I'll have a look in DIS and see what menu options there are for reading/adding keys?
So a year ago I gave up and took it into BMW man E14.
He sorted it out: new DME/EWS combo ignition barrel, door lock and 4 keys.
Also changed the Aux water pump
Only problem now is 1 year later it's back again.
Same diagnostic symptoms.
Aaargh - guess we didnt fix the underlying cause...
I have ordered a "new" DME/EWS/Key/Locks off fleabay
I need to diagnose the true cause of the underlying problem.
I have a strong suspicion that it's in the wiring loom.
I've unplugged the aux water pump and valve and removed the IHKA control unit and the symptom is still there.
So I'm going to see if the new DME solves it (even if it's temporary) then get it down to someone who can diagnose the wiring issue.
It's certainly trying my patience...
I swapped the DME and EWS and ignition barrel and...
Cleared down the error in the IHKA module and
it DIDN'T come back.
So where does that leave me - confused...
So the latest challenge is to get the 4 old keys transferred to work with the new DME.
After some research I have ordered this:
bmw Ews editor-Ews editor-Editor Ews-Online Shopping
I'll let you know how I get on...
I know this is a stupid question but where's the secondary air pump on my E46 318ti Compact 2003 with N42.
I've got an error code about the fuse - will post the proper details.
I know this is an old thread
You need another Ecu as yours has a broken tracking side the multilayer board
This then needs blanking whack is very hard on a me9 Ecu as it sector lock on the flash chip but can be done
This way you can use the original keys and ews with it's car I'd
