It dosen't have an egr valve. Have you checked ignition coils? If they are the original bremi coils they may be at fault, they should have a date stamp on the head, ie 42/02 week and year. Any with this date or before are common to fail.
Hope this helps and keep us posted how it goes.

Have you tried the previous suggestions, they're the more common causes? If you can rule them out, then we'd have a better idea of what else to start looking at

I have this code on my 2002 316ti E46 compact too. I have had a new timing chain tensioner and guide fitted after it slipped and also new plugs and new coil packs. I get a misfire when cold and the EML flashes then goes out. After a couple of days it will stay on and start running quite rough. If I pull over and switch it off and then restart it it runs ok apart from a misfire when changing gear and accelerating. I've bought a code reader now so that I can switch the EML off myself but the misfires are driving me mad. I have put BG44K through the fuel system and Hydraulic lifter cleaner into the oil as a lifter sticks when cold. Another thing I've noticed is the oil consumption seems high with no visible leak anywhere.

Watching this thread for any clues

Well I've sorted the misfire on mine. Was throwing codes P1341 P1345 and P 1349. Just unplugged the MAF and took it for a drive and all misfires had gone and no EML light has returned. Ordered a used Bosch one for £30 to try before I spend £180 on a new one.

That can only show an air metering problem, it might not be the MAF yet, but an airleak somewhere making cylinders leaner than they need to be to sustain ignition.

See what it is like with the new MAF, and if the problem remains, start looking for perished hoses.
