    hi guys,

I wanted to get some advice from you. I have in my possession a HTC desire smart phone, which surprising has a few apps that can read diagnostics, etc. The requirment for the phone to be able to read codes is that you need an OBD II compliant bluetooth dongle. So a few questions,

    i. I have a 52 reg 318i SE, is this OBD II compliant ? DO I need to be careful about the number of pins or something.

ii. What do you think of the following device ? I dont need anything expensive, just a hobby at this stage to read my codes ? Will this be ok for my car ?

iii. Any potential pitfalls e.g. can you fry the ECU, dont want to mess things up.

    appreciate the advice

Hi. The E46 is OBD2 compliant. Any reason for using your phone rather than a laptop? My preference would be for a dedicated BMW tool rather than something that reads the generic error codes.

Thanks for that. Well I dont have a laptop, just a desk top. And it is the phone driving the scan tool, if you know what I mean. Having said that the phone software is very impressive, offering heads up display, etc. I am just doing all this as a hobby really and seeing that its 'potentially' going to cost me around £30.

You may already be aware, but this is the sort of stuff you can get on an adriod phone these days

I am not trying to plug anything for anyone here, by the way.
