Ive read through most of the posts on cables on the forum and to be honest not being overly computer savie im still in the dark as to which cables to get for my 2001 e46 320d se?

Do i need a laptop with serial or will a usb port do the job

Should mention i want to be able to check codes and be able to reset my airbag light

    thanks in advance

if you are intending to use the BMW INPA software and interface cables then below applies....

serial interface INPA connection is easier to setup, but USB will work too its just a bit more tricky to setup as INPA was designed around serial connection, so with USB your are trying to trick the software into thinking the USB port is actually a serial port some jiggery pokery is required to acheive this...

you cannot use the cutdown 63MB ADS version of INPA with USB interfaces tho you have to use the full 326MB ADS/OBD select version..

the above will give full BMW diagnostics and code reading ability of all car modules (engine, chassis, body, drivetrain etc etc),generic OBD2 software and handhelds etc will not work on diesels before 2004..

follow the windows Enviromental Variables path bit in the install instruction closely when installing, other than that serial and the cutdown ADS inpa software is a doddle to install, make sure also com1 is not being used by anything else on ya machine...

Check the interface configuration settings in Ediabas.ini (C:\Ediabas\Bin), check that the interface is receiving power and use the 20-pin socket under the bonnet, if present. What operating system are you using? (Switch FIFO buffers on and increase the recieve value)
