    i bought a peake research code/reset tool model R5/FCX-3-16.

On plugging it in to the socket of my Dec 2001 E46 BMW 318iSE,i get the following-

    E A6 10 or it could be 10 E A6.

what does this mean as i cannot find it in the manual that came with the tool?

    E10 ERROR MESSAGE ON TOOL

E means the car is not responding to the tool; This often happens when the data line (also called diagnostic bus)inside the car is hung or disabled.occasionaly the R5/CFXwill display the message E followed by a number (most commonly10 or 11) when an attenpt is made to read codes or to reset the eml light

    things to try and resolve

    check insertion depth

reverse the power up sequense plug in the tool first then swith the ignition on

check pin 19 observe that pin 19 of your diagnostic connector is not resesed

cycle power plug in tool cycle the igniton key on and off two or three times (do not start engine)

i tried all of the above and still same 10E A46 message except checking pin 19 is not recessed not done yet.

which is pin 19?as the onboard diagnostic socket is a 16pin socket, hence may not apply to my car.

hi dont think this applies to you with the pin 19

it also says in my peake manual if you have other warning lights

observ that no other malfuction indicator lights are on often a malfuctioning module(ie DME,EGS/transmision,ABStraction control, etc)can impair or hang the diagnostic bus.

the only other option you have is to resetting of all modules(entire car)
before doing this make sure you have the code for the radio

    1) diconnect car battery
2)activate the emergancy flashers (this will fully drain all power from the ecus
    wait 5 mins
reconnect the main battery and try the tool again

    hope this helps

None of the above will work if the K-bus is hung. I'm guessing at some point, someone tried to use the pin short method to reset the service. If that is the case, then only professional equipment like DIS/Modic or Autologic will need to be used to reset the bus.

some time last yr i took the car to two different independent specialists because the emissions light came up.

they were both able to read the fault codes and the first indy just replaced one sensor and reset the emissions light.

the same light came on and the second indy pulled up te codes and 2 sensors were replaced and light reset.

i have no warning lights at present on the dash and i now used this peake tool just to have another look and keep getting this 10E A6 Code-so that is the background of events.

    any ideas?

i looked at fuses 30m and 43 which relate to the on-board diagnostic connector-both were fine,

i tried wiggling the tool connector while in operation-that did not help either.

    anything else i could try?

As above mate. Tried the batt disconnect etc so has to be reset properly.
