My engine light has come on for a second time on my 01, 318i. I got my local garage to reset it last time at a cost of £42 so when it came on this time I thought I'd buy my own obd2 reader from ebay. It arrived yesterday and frustratingly I can't get the reader to talk to my car with the supplied software. Anybody got any clues?

Any clues about what? your car? the reader? the software? totally clueless without you supplying details on the code reader make & model and the software used.

I've also retitled your thread and moved it to a more relevant forum.

2001 318i. Reader is called ELM 327 interface. Software I've used: Easy obd2, scantool and scanmaster. Cheers

Wouldn't it be an idea to fix whatever fault is causing the engine light to come on rather than just resetting it?

+1 on that, what's the point in resetting the light when it is only going to come back on and whatever it is that us causing it to come on may cause further damage if not fixed

I want to get the fault code so I can see what's causing the fault, then I can investigate what's causing the fault.

Why did you not get the codes off the garage when they reset it?

I never got those free OBD2 programs to work either, that's why I went with a VAGCOM and INPA setup.
