Hi, i recently purchased a e46, been driving for about 2 months now and the engine check light has come on, i decided that it would be worth my while purchasing a diagnostics kit so bought a scanner, but when i connect it to my obd2 port i get an error, saying that it cant connect, i have read up on this and it seems as though my obd2 port may not actually work? can anyone clear this up for me please? should i have bought a peake tool instead?

    Thanks Ryan

What scanner did you get?A bmw specific one or a generic one?I use both carsoft and a peake tool,if I want a quick check of things I plug in the peake tool as it reads codes easily and quickly however you can't reset the airbag light with it so thats when the carsoft comes in handy carsoft also has other uses too

You should be using the 20 pin diagnostic socket, under the bonnet.Even though some cars of your age were fitted with both sockets.

The 16 pin one in the car Does NOT have full diagnostic capabillities..

You must use the one under the bonnet.Top left hand corner if viewed facing the car..
