Hi All, complete BMW newbie here, only owned it for 4 days, lol

I`m finding it really confusing as to which Diagnostic interface/software to purchase. Having read a lot of info on here and other websites, it seems that my particular car ( 2000 E36 compact 70K FSH ) is somewhere between OBD and OBDII !

I have the 20 pin round connection under the bonet with pins 1,2,7,12,14,15,16,17,19 and 20 populated, also the 16 pin internal ( footwell ) socket.

Basically I want to be able to run full, all systems diagnostics from my laptop and be able to reset fault codes/service lights etc. ( I have airbag warning light on at the min, but dealer is going to fix that for free )

Would this meet my needs :

Some clarification from you BMW experts would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

The device on ebay should work but remember you will need a laptop with a true serial port as the usb to serial adapters dont work with BMW scanner.

I have a PCMCIA serial card which works with everything i`ve thrown at it, but if it doesn`t I can always use my Desktop pc until I get hold of an old lappy.

I just want to be sure that I get the whole setup, ie can reset fault codes on the SRS and whatnot.

I'd try Inpa or Carsoft instead.

.. and use the 20 pin plug in this case, not the inside one.
