My 1998 520i Touring is playing up. I have been told the ECU has had it. I have managed to get hold of an ECU, key and EWS? unit from a 1996 525i. Can this be coded into my car? If so, does anyone have the software to do it for me?

"I have been told the ECU has had it" Who told you this and on what evidence? Unless it's been subject to a shock or has become waterlogged its rare for ECUs to fail. Even the waterlogged ECUs often work OK once properly dried out.

Your 98 E39 520 has an M42 engine, the 96 E34 525 has an M50 engine. The ECUs are different so in all probability it won't work.

I had the car at a Diagnostic centre, they replaced Crank and Cam sensors then told me ECU had failed, don't have much faith in the Garage after that. I am taking it elswhere to be checked again, what are the chances of the ECU being repaired, 'if' it is faulty?
