    Hi Guys,
there are three questions that are flowing in my mind,

one, my car ( as many of u know ) is 328i 1998 e36 , would it be OBD II or I ? I think it is 2 as any car past 1996 has OBD II but just want to confirm it.

2nd, what is the protocol used by OBDII on my car, CAN, BUS??

and finally , if u were me and wanted to buy a software which works with OBD and is specifically designed for BMW, what would u have bought?
I need a software which can show EWS and many other features, not a typical DTC errors. BMW scanner seems like a good one, any ideas?

Many thanks and have a nice weekend

Why not get INPA? You need to have or obtain an old laptop with a serial port but then it does *everything*, and for cheap too.

Yes i have got a gendan eobd and have bought the 16 to 20 pin convertor but had no lock at connecting to my ecu.
By looking on the article posted about inpa( by the way thank u, very good article) it suggest that any obd with 16 pin convertor should work.

I have a copy of inpa v 5 but not sure if i can connect to my ecu using that
    Any suggestions

Got a link to what interface you have? I suspect the answer is it wouldn't work. If you just need access to the ecu just buy a £10 obd2 kkl interface.

I'll move this thread to the right section for you.

As far as I have read in
    http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/...tml#post753989

ADS is needed to access two line modules such as ABS airbag and ... but as the article says the OBD should be able to access the dtc and normal OBD things but nothing happens

    my device is genden

That's the elm interface. I don't think you'd get any success with Inpa.
