Hi just learning about all this diy diagnoses hardware and software so bare with me.I'm after something that reads codes, connects to my laptop but not something thats too basic.I've seen some stuff on youtube that shows alot of info about how your engine is performing fuel mix maps, air intake ect sorry if i'm not using the right terminalogy.I want something which i could use to tweak and tune the engine a bit as well as the basics.I have vista on my laptop so would probably want to stay away from carsoft

    Car specs E36 97 323i

Thanks in advance for your time

You will not be able to tweak/tune the engine using any of the diag products. You would need to use something like the Galletto tool to download the map to your PC and then tweak it using a map editor.

I guess you could also go for a piggyback ECU if you wanted to. When it comes to tuning you are better off speaking to someone like the forum sponsor emaps and get a proven map from him. At least then you will know that you car is running correctly.

You are right that Carsoft can be a pain on Vista, however it does work. IIRC the new version officially supports Vista. Inpa would be the other tool to look into and is a lot more powerful. However, Carsoft is much easier to use.

Well, the latest version of Carsoft home is available from Carsoft distributors for around £300. It includes a security dongle and will support the later model cars.

A lot of the pirated versions on Ebay are just the Carsoft 6.5 Compatable leads from http://www.one-stop-factory.com/products.jsp with a bit of a premium added on. The software is out there on the internet but I won't link to it as we are not a Warez site.

I take it your laptop does not have a serial port? If that's the case you may need to buy a USB to Serial converter. One with the FTDI chipset will be best. This has been covered before if you perform a search for "ftdi".
