    Hi

I've recently had my error codes checked and they're coming back with an error code for the speed sensor (120). this makes sense as the rev limiter kicks in at 5500rpm when it should be 6500rpm.
Is there anyway of checking which sensor it is as i'm under the impression theres one on each wheel or have i got mixed up somewhere along the way?
If any pointers could be given would be greatly appreciated and if i'm wrong on what the speed sensor is could you describe it to me and inform me where to find it?

    Many Thanks
    Hugo

There are a few different sensors, the main road speed sensor is in the diff, but there is also the engine speed sensors which are the crank and cam sensors.

In this case, it is the VSS vehicle speed. Have you got any problems with traction control or ABS sensors?

Also known as P0500, road speed signal. Will be the VSS then as TheEnd has said, Vehicle Speed Sensor.

    Hi.
you must connected X17 -pin2 from instrument cluster to X20 pin14 black/white ,to eliminated Speed sensor Error code. When you swap engine with automatic transmission on car with manual non speed signal ....5500rpm rev :( .I hope i was helpful .Greetings from Bulgaria

jus to note that the the donor car was a manual as is the original car, will try that over the weekend so thanks does anyone have or know of all the connector locations in a document or anything, have the full wiring manuals from BMW for all the wiring, jus takes a while trawling through it for each conenctor

Edit: just found them, wasn;t aware i had them

    BM warrior - you're a star..
I can't believe I had managed to entirely forget this, despite struggling with similar problems all over the week.
I did try the wire jump before, but I later tracked down the problem to a cut wire for VSS.
I wasn't sure if I could jump the signal across as I didn't know if the clocks swapped the format.

For info, the brown/red in the small black plug is the output from the diff speed signal, and then the clocks send it on on a black/white wire from X20, which is the large plug next to it I think it's the white one of the 2, but either way, it's the one that is an inch away, and not the far plug.

This confirms 2 things, 1 - that VSS will cause the rev fault limit, and 2 that the wire can be jumped.
