Hi guys, does anybody know how the top speed regulation is done on the E36 M3? I've found this module that I cannot connect to labelled top speed regulation VMX, does this mean my car is not restricted?

Not really too worried either way as I've never got anywhere near that speed but it intrigues me!

I can remember there was something in the car's original spec about it being for export does this have any bearing on it??

    Cheers

    Ian

VMX will be German shorthand for Vmax, as in Velocity Maximum.

Does it look like a BMW part? I think it might be an aftermarket frequency clamp, which holds the Vehicle Speed Signal (VSS) at just below the limiter.

It it was from BMW, the Vmax would be lifted in the ECU

Thanks for the reply, was hoping you would have a look in!

It's an option that I am being offered in GT1.

I have a feeling it lists a huge number of possible modules that aren't actually fitted.
I've seen reference to it in lists of diagnosable modules, and also one mention that it was fitted on a 3.8 M5.

It's possible that Japanese spec cars had this fitted, as they are supposed to be limited to 118 something.

I have seen the 3.8 M5 reference as well.

Do you see it as an option when you connect to yours using GT1?

So as far as you are aware the restriction is in the map?

If i had a VMX module, it'd be at least 3 miles from the ECU at the moment!

I had a look though some modules in a full ETK i have on the laptop, and no mention of this part on a 3.2.
It certainly won't be a popular UK module as i've never seen it mentioned before, and i haven't seen one on my evo either.
For all of the BMWs i've known, the limiter is part of the software, so it's a bit of a mystery where this module comes in.

That's what it would look like, taken from the E34 M5 3.8 parts catalogue
