So i've read a fair few different posts on diagnostic kits, but I dont have an OBD2 socket as its a 96 plate.

My laptop only has USB ports, its 64 bit and running Windows 7.

My car is a 1996 328i Cabrio. I want to read the CVM for the roof to see what the problem is.

What diagnostic options are there for me?

    TIA

That's a shame, Thanks for the response though.

    So something like this:

BMW 20PIN to DB9 DB 9 Serial Port RS232 Adaptor Diagnostic Cable 20 pin | eBay

Would this work with a USB to Serial adapter like this:

    USB 2.0 to Serial RS232 DB9 9 Pin Serial Port Adapter Windows 7 32 64 Win7 Vista | eBay

Or do i need to go old school and find an old laptop?

    Cheers. J

I got this to work fine using a 20pin to rs232 cable, BUT you have to get a decent serial to usb connector and software. You then follow the guides on assigning "com1" to the port. Not too difficult. There are cheap ones, about a fiver I think, but not money well spent. Get one from a known brand, like Belkin, and pay a bit more. It's worth it.
I would tell you what mine is, as it works, but I have mislaid the whole blasted cable and have my E34 dead!

Should have added that this works on rubbish Windows 7 64bit, but more reliable on my Windows xp netbook. I wish it would run on Linux. I have "wine" on linux and must find time to play. It might work, and would be well worth it.

trust me ya better off with a laptop with a serial port it is very few and far between wot will work with usb serial adaptors, INPA is very twitchy as to what type of adaptor you could arse about all over the place and get very frustrated...

just buy a real cheap old lappy for 40 or 50 quid with a serial port throw XP on it it will be far far easier...

IBM T series laptops are good n cheap but they stopped having serial ports after the T30 but they still have the serial architecture so you can buy a docking station for a T series for under a tenner which has a functioning serial port...
