    Evening all,

As per the title is it possible to buy the BMW diagnostics software and a cable to plug into the car for a laptop?

Does anyone know where you could get this from and if its possible to run on a laptop or would it cost the earth and several organs?

You can't buy it, but there are copies of it about.
It either needs to be run on an IBM T20 or T30 laptop (it checks what hardware it is running on, it was meant to be on a Unix tablet) or you need to set up a virtual machine on your own laptop.
This is a program that emulates an entire PC in your own PC, and the Unix stuff runs inside of that.
You'll then need an interface on the outside, these vary from £20-40 leads which have varying success to clones of the BMW diagnostic head, currently down to about £400

It's a hell of a lot cheaper than getting ex BMW kit, that'd still be worth 2k+ depending on the setup, but it's a lot of head scratching.

Thanks for the reply TheEnd. I have found this on eGay, does this look like it could be any good? The screen shots look ok and the description sounds fairly comprehensive.

Yes, that's the stuff, what he's done is rip off a guide done on http://bmwecu.org/ and i assume the video done by a guy on there.

It certainly isn't as easy as the guy makes out, you have to set up a few virtual networks, and ideally need a better lead than what he has got on show.

That's a good price for a Inpa lead especially when bundled with software. The lead used to be about £50 ordered from China! Don't think it will give you full connecivity to the E36 though.

I suspect that setup works without running a diaghead emulator and probably has a working vmdk image so is a bit more straight forward than the installs we have done.

The interface in your link is the one I use and autodetect etc works.

In the first link, he states he's ran out of cables, so you just get a DVD or two!

Damn missed that, I just skimmed it and was going off his previous ads.

Still the knowledge is worth something, it takes months to learn about it all. It also removes the hassle of trying to find known working versions of software. Even without a image of the VM, the downloads to install it manually are huge.

I know a few of you on here and running this, how easy was the install?
