I've obtained a retro panasonic toughbook with the all-important built-in serial port. I've also now got an OBD + ADS adapter with the required connector. Having installed the ADS-only cut-down version of INPA (which loads without problems), I tried to hook this setup to my car but I can't seem to get it to work.

EDIABAS.ini is set to interface = ADS, the serial port connected is set to 03F8 IRQ4, COM port 1 with no apparent conflicts, FIFO buffers enabled with Receive and Transmit set at 8, Bits per Seconds at 9600, Data bits at 8 with no parity, 1 stop bit and no flow control.

My physical ADS interface is illuminating correctly for ADS and ignition detection, but INPA isn't seeing anything. I have tried accessing many modules with no success and varying error codes, but I think this is more to do with the hardware, ADS or Port settings, as INPA is not even sensing the battery/ignition detection.

I ran the ADSsetup.exe and command window opens then immediately closes, is this correct? I'm wondering if the driver didn't install correctly and that's why INPA can't talk to the interface?

Anyone got any idea what I've done wrong???

    Using an adapter like this:
eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

There is a modem, but set to a different I/O address and IRQ number. I've now switched this off, as well as the parallel port and Other serial port (that would be on a port replicator). I'm gonna try this again but I don't think this was an issue - They were all set to different I/Os and IRQs.

    Hasn't miraculously started working :(
The ediabas symbol does flash blue when I attempt to do something, is this it actually connecting to the car or does it do it when not attached as well?
Do I need to have the 'IgnitionHandling' flag set to 1? It's defaulted to 0 despite it saying the deault is 1?
Do I need to modify the 'Port' flag? It's currently at 3000

Am I correct in assuming that selecting the instrument cluster setting in INPA (under E36) will work regardless of my car? I'm not sure if it will work with my ECU as I have a 1994 VANOS non-ews (?) m50 2.0l engine, so i want to know if it's not working cus of my ecu or because of my setup.

Well I'm happy to say I resolved the problems. Was nothing wrong with any of my setups, but my serial extension cable appears not to be working - I now think maybe its a cross-over cable instead. Unfortunately when I came to check my cable I could not find any others, so I stuck with it until I removed it all together just now. Learnt my lesson!

Yay for ADS! Managed to talk to my DME, instrument cluster and (strangely?) my E39 retrofitted cruise control. I will attempt more in a few days when I get a new cable, but for now its a bit wet for my liking.
