Well were you trying an OBDII tool or pre OBD?
What is the make type and model of your original tool?

    Does your car run?

Have you tried the flash codes?

    Have a look HERE

I'll send you a pin if you like FOC (no warranty implied or given) that is if your car supports them

Unless its a genuine version of carsoft then it'll be hard to read the codes sometimes it'll connect other times not...as for the Garage did they use a BMW specific or agenereic scanner?

Could be a wiring issue. Could just have got confused. Have you disconnected the battery for a bit?

Did that help pulling the battery or is it still the same?

Check control isn't fitted to all cars therefore not a dependancy of the EFI so I would say no.

I can't clear the "service" symbol in wife's '94 325 but I know it needs a lambda so figured it was that.
