Hi, I have recently acquired a BMW e36. The key is very tatty and the rubber buttons appear to be perishing. Is it possible to transplant the key blade and electrics into a new key casing? Ive seen blank keys for sale however they all seem to include a blank key blade as well.
Absolutely, it a very quick job. There's a few videos on YouTube showing exactly how it goes. If your e36 key is like mine (I didn't even recognize there were separate buttons!) when you open it you'll find that the paper where some conductors easily separates from the main circuit board, due to age. It's not a big deal but just make sure you repackage it all together in same way. Also don't lose the mini-chip inside, without that the key is useless.
