    Hi Everyone!

Recently bought a 2005 X3 for the wife, great little car (first X3, but 5th BMW being a E46 330d lover).

Just went to use the spare key (an original so i'm told, but never used by the looks of it) and it won't start the car. Unlocks doors etc OK though. Have tried the reporgamming steps (hold unlock, press lock 3 times etc) but as I understand that only re-sets the remote door lock.

What I think I need is the EWS re-programming. I called the dealer, they seem to be very sketchy about it all - "Might need a new key, £150. Then programming on top, £85". Seems ridiculous, plus i'm sure a new key comes already programmed for your car (in terms of EWS).

Anyway, I'm looking for options to try fixing my existing key. Are there any places that do EWS programing or offer key services in general for more sensible rates (I'm in kent)? Can I do it myself with an EWS1/2/3/3+ programmer (they seem to be available on deal extreme and other sites for under $100).

The key does start the car if it used immediately after the key that works. I'm assuming the immobilizer is still disabled for a number of secons after removing a good key.

    Thanks for any advice!

BW Chiptune could do it, they are near Heathrow, otherwise you'll have to check for vehicle locksmiths, as they have evolved into doing electronics now too.

If the transponder in the key is faulty, then re-programming the ews won't help.

Have you checked that the key hasn't been disabled in the ews?

I would recommend spending 30 quid on a BMW scanner 1.4.

failing that working, I can programme new transponders to your ews.

I could do you 2 complete spare keys for less than the price of one from BMW.

does sound like the transponder. sounds like it needs new transponder chip programming to ews. yes new key from bmw is surpose to already be programmed to ews.

"The key does start the car if it used immediately after the key that works. I'm assuming the immobilizer is still disabled for a number of secons after removing a good key."
yes m8 from my testing that is right immobilizer is disabled for about 15 to 20 secs. after using a working key.
