    Hi,

I'm currently in the middle of an engine conversion. Converting my 1999 316i compact to 2.8 from a 1996 328i saloon.

Firstly, we've noticed that the main connector (x20 connector, 25 pins) between engine wiring loom and the rest of the car has some pins in different places. The 328's side also has an extra pin in use, presumably for the MPG gauge.

So in order to match the pins up, I need wiring diagrams for the x20 connector for a 1996 328i and a 1999 316i compact.

Secondly, my car is infact an EWS 3! An EWS 3-D module to be exact. The 328 donor car was an EWS 2. However both have 15 pins, both have the same connector and both have 3 pins not in use. In terms of the colour of the wires, 8 match, only 4 don't. The two thick wires used for the starter circuit in pins 1 & 3 of EWS 2 cars are also in my cars EWS 3 module, same colour, just different places - pins 7 & 8.

I have the wiring diagram for the EWS 2 module from the Bentley manual, but is this reliable as its America...?

    Otherwise I need wiring diagrams for a 1996 328i EWS 2 module and a 1999 316i EWS 3 module.

Same as the x20 connector I'm hoping to rearrange the wiring of my cars connectors to suit the donor parts. Or if anyone knows a better way than I'm all ears!

Any other help and advice is also welcome

    Thanks!

I think what you really need is "pin out" diagrams for the multiplugs of both looms that you are trying to splice together.

My past experience of engine conversions in French cars have taught me this as you will probably find that the actal wiring diagrams do not give you the "Pin out" location of each wire, and what each wire does.
If you know a friendly independant garages with Autodata, then they may be able to help you out with Pin Out diagrams.

Quite right Russ. I've been searching through the diagrams I have as they do show the x20 as a junction along the different wires, but of course the manuals are hundreds of pages long and they're spread throughout it!

    But my findings thus far:

I have marked those that appear to be a match.

    316i compact x20 (car side)-----------------------------328i x20 (engine side)

Pin no. Colour Function --------------------------------- Colour Function
    1 YEL - ABS/ASC control unit --------------------------- not used
    2 BRN - ABS/ASC control unit --------------------------- not used
    3 BLK/GRN - Exhaust gas valve/temp ? ------------------ GRY/VIO ?
    4 BLK/BLU - AC compressor relay ----------------------- BLK/BLU Air con
    5 not used -------------------------------------------- BLK/GRY Aux. fan/diagnostic ?
    6 not used --------------------------------------------- VIO/GRY ?
    7 GRN - Immobiliser device ----------------------------- GRN ?
    8 BLK/WHT - Fuse/DME relay --------------------------- RED/WHT ABS ?
    9 WHT/GRN - ABS/ASC control unit ---------------------- BRN/RED ?
    10 BLU/YEL - Reverse light switch ? --------------------- BLU/YEL Static oil level ? (colour matches...)
    11not used -------------------------------------------- BRN/YEL Water temp
    12 not used ------------------------------------------- BRN/VIO Water temp
    13 GRN/VIO - Fuel pump relay ------------------------- GRN/VIO Fuel pump
    14 WHT/VIO/YEL - Fuse/OBD con. ? ------------------- not used
    15 BLK/GRN - Unloader relay ? ------------------------- BLK/GRN Unloader relay
    16 WHT/YEL - Diagnostic/DME ------------------------ WHT/YEL Rx data/diagnostic
    17 WHT/VIO - Diagnostic connector ------------------- WHT/VIO Tx data/diagnostic
    18 BLK/YEL - Starter --------------------------------- BLK/YEL Starter
    19 WHT/GRN - Diagnostic/instrument cluster ---------- WHT/GRN Service reser/diagnostic
20 BLK - Various control units ------------------------ BLK Various control units
    21 GRN - DME/ignition switch ------------------------- GRN Igition
    22 GRN/WHT - Fuse/various control units ------------- GRN/WHT Fuse F26/ various sensors etc.
    23 BRN/GRN - ? --------------------------------------- BRN/GRN Oil pressure

    24 GRN/YEL - OBC ------------------------------------ WHT/BLK Fuel rate/MPG (a match?)
25 BLU Instrument cluster ----------------------------- BLU ignition warning

The colours were read from the connectors themselves, it's just some of the functions I'm not sure of.

Could people PLEASE fill in the blanks or correct any mistakes.

Also are they all necessary - sounds daft, but for example would the '96 328i saloon of had ASC like my current car...?

    Many thanks

I know it seems like you're banging your head against a brick wall, but if you can find a friendly garage that has autodata, and can give you the pin out data and diagrams (normally for a wee drink) then it will make all things clear.

As you already know, some pins in one plug, may be in a different pin location in the other plug and this is where the Autodata diagrams will come into thier own. Basically, you can establish what each pin in the car loom is, and marry it to the engine loom.

Anyone on here got access to the pin outs for both cars?

For a e36 328i, the ECU wiring pin out, (looking at ECU plug with wires running away from you), #1 is top left and runs from left to right then going down finishing at bottom right #88.

So looks like this....... 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 etc-------->------28
    ..................................29,30,31,32,33 etc---->----55

But I'm still none the wiser am I?

I need x20 pin outs, Tefal has posted ECU pin outs...

    Or am I missing something?
