I'm a newbie on here but have (a long time ago!) had my own business as an auto electrician and that looks very like either an aftermarket alarm, possibly a custom fit job or maybe a reverse-parking sensor of some description.

That said, looking at the spaghetti-like pile of black wires (which someone else mentioned) i would guess it's an alarm/immobiliser unit. Are there any distinguishing marks on it at all, maybe under the rubber boot on the back of the main unit?
    Cheers

    Dave

    Its an alarm

this is what comes up in BMWfans.info when you put the part number in
    Multiple start interruption, 82*92*9*404*902

it gives all the ages of BMW it was used in

    and here is the diagram
    Alarm system BMW 5' E34, 535i (M30)

I just picked the model and age at random which is why it states E34 535i at the top
    loud-low-slow-project

It's the immobiliser part of your EWS fella. The alarm system of the car is broken down into various parts and that is one of them.
