hi people, i need some quick advice

i recently bought a scrapped e36 318 (previous driver had lost his liscence and car is still a runner apprently - 8months left on mot) to use as a donor car for a kit car build. the car had no key with it, and as it was scrapped i have no way of contacting the last owner. i want to check the engine runs before i strip the whole thing down but i cant get it started with out the key (there must be some sort of chip in the key which deactivates the immobiliser?) i've pulled the loom out and i can get all the electrics in the car working apart from the ignition system. is there anything i can do or am i going to have to buy a new ecu and matching key?

    thanks alot
    jay

I'm pretty certain that with the vin number and proof of ownership, BMW will make you a new key. No need for new ecu. I don't think its too expensive either.

Yep BMW will supply a new key with proof of ownership, the imobiliser is contained in the DME (engine ECU) and comunicates with the keys via the EWS (car ECU), easier just to get a new key than faff about with secondhand keys/locks and DME's
