I'm having a bit of a problem initializing my remote locking on my 1996 E36 compact, The key I have is the 3 button type but without a l.e.d.
The car has the mirror which I think has the receiver built into it, it's the mirror with the large round knob to dip.
I have tried all the programming methods that I have read on here but nothing, the car locks and unlocks no problem with the key on the drivers door but the passenger door has no lock.
    Any help would be grateful

Thanks for that, it's the exact same set up as mine but. I have no alarm led on the dash.
I called my local BMW dealer for more info and to ask about a spare key as I only have the one, the info they gave me was, that a spare key would be around £40-£50 but they also said that the compact of that age didn't have the 3 button key and should have the separate key fob with buttons!

A key with 3 buttons and with a chip is around £130 from BMW but I think that at some point the key I have is a replacement, but the wrong type but with a correct coded chip.
I am calling into to them this week so they can see the car and check with the chassis number what spec the car was built too.

    I'll keep you posted.
