1999 Saloon 520 Radio on mute
I have recently had my car serviced at a local garage and the radio, although on, has no volume. It appears to be in permanent mute. I dont have a phone connected to it, but cannot vouch for previous owners. I have owned the car for 4 years with no previous problem, and it was fine before the service. The garage are stumped ! I have had minor electrical repairs done at the service and wondered if something has been altered causing the radio to mute.As I do a loy of mileage I need it back on !! Can anyone offer any solutions?

I cant imagine the service would do this there are several poss reasons for this

    1. Determine if it even has a handsfree kit fitted first (easiest way to determine this is remove the head unit).

    2. If it does and has a mute lead then look at the harness at the rear of the radio and if there is one there remove it temporarily and plug oe loom back into the unit and try it

    3. If the system is standard non amplified then there is always the poss the
audio ic chip has gone in the unit in which case ebay will be a cheaper option

hope this casts some light on you problem

My 2000 year 728i has done the same, it has no sound at all sometimes then it works fine, the amps are known to go faulty, I took mine out, put it back in and seems to work ok now...
