    I have a 03/2005 E61 535D

I scanned for errors due to the airbag and restains systems fault reported by idrive.

The image below shows what I got: ERROR CODE 20, 93F9 on SIM/SGM module

From a search on-line this points out to a faulty Airbag Control Module (and not the occupancy mat as I was previously pointed to)

Could you please confirm if this is the case and, if yes, would the item below do for a replacement and what kind of coding would it need to work on my car?
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120776232178

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Been doing some searching and other people with the same issues had to replace the Airbag ECU with Gateway Module
    either number 65776962703 (preferable)
or number 65776975686 if compatible with my car (May 2005)

    Info here:
    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...38&hg=65&fg=65

Any idea of used part suppliers that might help me find one in this forum?

Evening all, It's been a long time since I was on this forum but thought I would reply to this.

In June I bought a 2005 E60 523i with 85k on the clock and full BMW service history, and the day after I collected it the engine light came on. Less than two weeks after that the airbag / seat belt light came on, and mine also needs the ECU replaced. BMW quoted £848 to do the job, but I've been pursuing the line of what was sold to me wasn't fit for purpose, and so far the garage have paid for everything. Anyway, it's going in to BMW on 17th and I've asked if I can have the faulty ECU just so I can open it up to see if there is anything obvious as this seems to be a relatively common fault. If I find anything I'll post back here!

I had the same problem in my E39 and it was down to a faulty Airbag ECU.

It would have cost me the same sort of figure but not sure where the ECU is fitted? Mine was fitted under the centre console. Not sure where yours is?

My solution was to get a second hand one off ebay for £15 pounds and did the job myself. I did manage to get one similar year and so it didn't even have to be reprogrammed to the car as many here thought it would.

Half the BMW cost is down to labour and so try and do it yourself if you can. There is lots of info on the internet and youtube to show you.

So look for one on ebay with same type serial numbers and go from there.

I can tell you that in this case, most of the cost is the unit itself. I'm pretty sure the labour was £105 + VAT, the rest was the replacement ECU. I suspect that the E60 version will have to be programmed to the car, they seem to like to make it more difficult with every new generation of cars.

I would guess the ECU is fitted somewhere very convenient then as 100 quid is less than one hours work at the Stealers, remove, refit and reprogramme?

I know the E39 ECU is around 300 pounds plus vat and it took me a few hours to remove and refit everything. I did see a brand new ECU for around £100 on ebay for my E39 and so maybe you could get one and ask them to fit it?

Also there are places that will check and repair the ECU as well which is a cheaper option. I guess because the E39 last year of manufacture is getting on to ten years old now then they will be cheaper to source than the E60/61. I think the first year of the E39 was around 1995?

Well I got my car back this evening and for the first time since 11th June, I don't have any warning lights illuminated on my car. The BMW garage fitted a new airbag ECU and everything is now good. I've got the faulty unit with me so I'll have a look around it. Not sure of the total cost but I think it's around £633 + VAT as the garage I bought the car from managed to negotiate the price down a bit.
