Not so much the damp, as hard seals not sealing. My 540 ran like a pig until I changed the oil separator diaphragm. It is more silicon than rubber, but still goes hard with age and cold. Oil doesn't help it. I'm not familiar enough with that engine, but find the hairdryer significant. Something happens when it warms up. Pumping warmed my fuelpump seals so it eventually worked. The same could be happening, or the warmth from trying to start/kicking could be enough. Where do you point the hairdryer? I shall look on realoem and see what rubbery parts/seals there are that could be doing this.
Sounds like a Microsoft car to me. Stops, starts, stops stops etc. It doesn't go blue too does it? Sorry!
    Mike

As I suspected, loads of rubber pipes and a rubber diaphragm for oil separation. I suggest you look here. Here is a link to the page, if it works RealOEM.com * BMW E46 325i Crankcase-Ventilation/oil separator

When your car is running, what happens if you undo the oil filler cap? If it speeds up it's probably OK, if it doesn't it's probably blocked/stuffed. Gives an idea, but far from conclusive.
Valve is probably about £20/£30. Never hurts to renew it. Check the pipes too. They don't like oil and can swell, collapse, block etc. All of this can screw up starting.

Haha Mike .... gotta have a sense of humour or I'd cry!
I just point the hairdryer into a corner and let the whole bay get warm while the blankets keep the warm air in.
I'm in Durham ... and not to sound ignorant but whats inpa?

And if it makes any difference .... the problem is only at cold start, it's fine and runs great all day after that, stopping and starting faultlessly as normal.
I will have to check what happens when i open the oil filler cap whilst running ...

That would be awesome if you could? I need to go out about 1pm to collect my daughter but I can stay in all morning, and not start it and it might show it's symptoms while you're here!

Good man Lee. That's what is needed. I have it too, but am in Rugby, not round the corner. If you have a laptop and a bit of computer literacy, and a lot of common sense then it's well worth loading. Pity it has to use Microsoft. I use Linux.
Anyway, INPA will show an airleak if I am on the right track. It should tell you what's up anyway.
    Goodluck.
    Mike
