Hey, I'm a first year electronics student and I've never dabble with car electronics before so please excuse my ignorance if my ideas are wayyyy off :P
I'm starting a little project to hook up an instrument cluster to my computer and use data from a racing sim to control the instruments. I've found various wiring diagrams along with a document describing the pins on the connectors.
EDIT: I should probably add that I've chosen the instruments from an E36 318i to work on, if that has any bearing on things!
Now as I'm a first year student, I'm not too great at reading schematics yet. What I need to know, is how the instrument cluster is controlled.
I'm assuming there is some sort of digital electronics inside, so if I want to control the dials/lights, do I need to be sending digital signals?
If it's not digital, I need to find out which voltages are used for each pin.
Again, my apologies if I'm completely wrong about all of this, I'm still learning electronics and I have no idea how instrument clusters work, its all a big learning curve right now but I've always been one for throwing myself in at the deep end.
Any help would be massively appreciated!
