Hey guys, I've got a problem with my e46 330d not starting....first turn of the key in the ignition, all the relevant lights come on, fuel pump seems fine, then go to fire and nothing, just the click of the key turning...(vid below)

Now it all started a few days ago, I noticed that my battery light was on. Got to Saturday night after work, I went to start it and it wouldn't start as the battery was dead. I managed to get it running but we didn't leave it charging too long. Then with the car running (thinking the alternator would charge the battery) I switched the lights on and started driving out, but then noticed everything dimming. Parked the car up with it running, then all of a sudden, a few lights flickered/dimmed on the dash and the car died again. So I thought it's definitely got to be the alternator not charging the battery.
So took the battery out, got a lift home, put it on quick charge, then later on went back to the car and fitted the battery and also put jump leads on to charge it up some more. Turned my car over and started perfect, all the lights really bright, so thought brilliant, this will get me home!
Then on the way home (10 mile trip) the battery started dying again, everything started getting dimmer and flickering, had to stop at some traffic lights and the car was being really sluggish. Then ended up dying on me again, battery totally flat.
Ended up getting it jumped again and just getting it home. So then took the battery out, took it inside and left it on charge all of Saturday night. Plan was to get it charged, get the car running again and do some tests on the alternator.

Come Sunday morning, fitted the battery, and then the car wouldn't start at all (vid above).

    What I've done so far:
Tested the battery, seems fine (holding 12.5, a little low but should be enough to crank the motor)
Tried jumping it with various cars,
Tested the fuel pump and fuel pump relay, all seem fine
Tested the starter solenoid, there is a permanent feed going to it, but seems to be nothing going from the ignition barrel to the starter
The starter cranks the engine but it doesn't fire up when bypassed

So the suspected fault is somewhere between the key/ignition and the starter....I'm not good with electrics at all so I'm stumped
Hoping it's not something immobiliser related....

    Any ideas guys? :(
    Any help is appreciated

On a related note, there's not anyone from around Nottingham/Derby that has diagnostic software!?

How old is the battery? If its goosed no amount of charging is going to help. Did you test it with a multi meter? You really need to get a Intelligent Battery Tester on it this will tell you the true state of the battery. BM's are very fussy when it comes to battery power, if the ecu/dde is not reading enough power it wont even attempt to start...so I would not rule out battery just yet.

Did you jump it on the battery or the jump points under the bonnet?

    Where in Notts are you?

Couldn't tell you how old the battery is, I have tested it with a multimeter and it's holding around 12.5v's.

I jumped it from the boot, even tried last night with an xc90, terminal points in the bay were reading 13.5ish. Surely that would be enough....?

Going to remove the battery and get it tested later on today when I sort out some insurance on my mums car!

I'm in Long Eaton, near Chilwell/Beeston etc

Don't jump it from the battery, it can cause electrical issues, only use the terminals under the bonnet.

I have a battery tester and the BMW diagnostic software on my laptop if you are around tomorrow afternoon I can give you a hand, not far from you in Ilkeston...

    Think I found the culprit:

The ignition switch, the tab for the ignition isn't making proper contact when turned, and was very burnt...
Can see the burning on the plastic and on the top right hand tab

Getting a new one today, hopefully it does the trick!

I'm stumped. That didn't fix it. The old ignition switch was definitely damaged. Tested the new one, which seemed perfectly fine.

    Fitted and tested, nothing. :(

    Anyone?

Right guys, Mark (above), kindly offered his help to diagnose the car. The first error we were given:

    That was using INPA
Now after some playing around, we found an error in DIS I believe, about the rolling code for the key not matching the EWS...

Now it's the only key I have which makes it a little annoying. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do next, pretty sure I've read a couple of people have reset/re-synced keys using INPA....Anybody know how to?

Could it be that the EWS is fried?

    Cheers

This what we have tried in INPA and DIS and its not having a bar of it.

We tried the EWS menu in INPA under DDE>EWS sync (or something like) then there are two options both are in German neither did anything, could do with someone who knows the correct process of this menu.

The EWS module fault codes show the error is with the rolling code sync.

We can run DIS and communicate with the modules and run the test plan which again shows the EWS Rolling code as NOT OK, but can not get any further with the options. I have seen a post about entering the coding menu which is before diagnose menu that has some EWS options...anyone know any more on that?
