Hi all, Last night i took the car to get fuel, not paying attention to what i was doing i turned it over and the car was in gear :-/ that was the last time it turned over not too worried (got a new starter motor on its way).
Today on my way to work it got more interesting, as i came onto the bypass i noticed the indicators were not working in the car, and then noticed nothing was working in the car, did the window up (that took a long time), at the other end of the bypass the cars dials were jumping all over, not reading rev counter not moving same with the speedo and it was missing badly, reved it and it all came back on.
i was thinking had to be the battery, but then why was the dash lights back on now?
when i finished work i had to get a push, car seemed fine for about 200mtrs and then the car did not wont to be at low revs, i did not get out of 3rd on the bypass and had to stay in 2nd of the other rds on the way to the workshop.
i would like to say at this point i had no dials wot so ever the whole trip, and im not normally stupid enuff to drive a car that has some thing major wrong but had no choice as my dad was busy and i cant abandon it.
any way got down there sounded like it was running on 4 cylinders if i was lucky, turned it off then turned it back an dash lights on wont start, i have been thinking that it could be, altenator battery and starter, but i have never had a car that behaves this way if it just that, so confused
    any ideas.
    thanks Darryl

Defo battery/alternator. Get it checked for free if you have a garage nearby. Was the battery light on previous to the problem? If so, not charging=alternator, if not =battery.

A simple check of measuring the voltage accross the battery when the car is running will establish if the alternator is fubar, anything below 13.5/14.5v would indicate you need a new one, if the voltage accross reads 13.5/14.5v then it's fair to say the battery is probably fubar...Good Luck.

well after replacing the alternator, Battery, still would not start, the starter would not spin, so spent a day taking the inlet off and putting a new starter on, putting it back together.
Still no Diff aaaaarrrrrgggghhh. what the hell. so now im thinking that its the EWS.
Am i right in thinking that as i have got this off a breaker that i need
ecu, barrel key ews unit and all other locks to make the car work.
ive had the car a year now always serviced, it and replace any thing it needed (service parts) never let me down.
I have never had a car that has gone wrong like this with no warning before, all i can say is i hope that it is this coz im running out of money now FAST :-(

Sounds like maybe the battery wasn't charging due to a duf connection so maybe allchanged for no reason. I would check out each set of terminls as being clean and tight from battery to starter, so BOTH ends of the earth lead and that brass pin near the windscreen on the drivers inner wing and the small terminals behind the plastic underneath it etc.

Of course you could check it out with a volt meter.

The important question when cars won't turn over is can you hear the starter solenoid click.

Find the EWS box behind the glove box, unplug it, and get a wire to poke into the holes for pins 1 and 3. These are the two biggest wires on the plug.

1 1/2 inches of wire with the ends stripped back, looped into a U then poked into 1 and 3 will allow the starter to go.

Try the key again (the engine won't start, but the starter motor should turn-

Starter motor doesn't move - problem elsewhere
Starter moves fine - EWS is stopping it.

Lack of fuel pump priming gives that away anyway
