When you say fan speed goes up do you mean you can hear the motor whirring round?
If so, I'd guess its a hose off somewhere...

ive just fixed the same thing on my car, all be it a e36, i replaced the FSR first as its fairly cheap on flea-bay, that may solve the issue, in my case i had to replace the motor, new from the manufacturer they cost a fair bit, i got a second hand one (tested working) for about £30. the FSR takes about 20 mins to fit, the heater motor took me and a mate about 2 hours to do!
    hope that helps!

I have had loads of weird problems with my 330 convertible of which several are still waiting to b cleared. I also have the bars showing on the display but have no fan. What is an Fsr ? I also have no hood function and neither do the radio controls on the steering wheel function.Lovely car but an electrical nightmare, I am going back to a guy who resolved the following.Intermitent air bag warning light showing, no main beam light on dash, Intermitent display of drivers door being open, inability to turn off hazard warning lights. My electrician says there is a live supply going to the connection bar in the glovebox adjacent to the fuse board. He has eliminated all but two inputs which he has yet to trace , the inputs are from the fan and the radio, radio working apart from steering wheel functions, fan is inoperative. Anyone any ideas ? Thanks.

Interesting post, my E46 had complete loss of blowers, got home in the crate got a torch out when i got home to inspect the fuses they were fine, just to discover on the cold engine the engine temperature now flew up onto the red for no reason and continues to do so, and the crate failed to start, I am not sure if the Hedgehog had caused other issues in the car, be interesting to find out if yours had followed such a pattern?
