Hi can anyone help me I have a bmw x5 3.0d auto e53 120k on the clock was driving the other day in traffic and suddenly I lost drive in the car I got it home in limp mode the error message on the screen read tran failsafe mode I have found that when I restarted the car it drives fine for 1 min then I loss drive again the message has gone from the screen as well. I have a friend who is a mechanic who as had a look he said he does not think it’s the gearbox as it drives when engine is restarted so he believes it to be a sensor but the obd port on my car is not reading we have tried 3 different readers on It and no joy he trace wires for ecu and they appear to be fine but still not reading.
Recant work do on it was:
A new turbo fitted new intercooler
NEW MAF sensor, used inlet manifold as old one split open the replacement was full of carbon and smoke under heavy acceleration so I had it removed and clean so I changed MAF sensor again as it got fouled by carbon
Also fitted was a powerflow exhaust
    Diesel performance chip module
    New shock
    Oil change
    Filter air/oil
Load of money spent on her I need serious help to get her back on the road the ecu was not reading before this problem I did around a 1000 mile after this work was complete so I assume it unrelated to work done or performance module.

I guess you have been trying to use the 16-pin diagnostic socket under the dash'? Look under the bonnet and you should find a round 20-pin diagnostic socket. Use that.

IIRC it's near the passenger strut top.

Thanks for the help it turns out that I was using the right port for diagnostic the one under steering wheel just that the reader I had only reads diesel engine after 2004 and my car is a 2001 although reading still did not help. I manage to fix gearbox problem by oil and filter change car is driving fine. I found a lot of shit in the sump all cleaned out now thanks for your help
