You may need a trailer module.
My e46 trailer wiring goes into a box and then wires at the rear cluster are then tapped into.

Ive got a relay which is what thry said i needed which is a little box. So just tap into the lights wiring the box has fittings whicg you place each wire into along side the tow bar wire and clamp down onto it.

    Yea,that could be it.
Is the box powered by the battery?
My box has a positive and a negative wires which are connected to the battery and also the terminals as you describe.
Which means my box is allways powered(little red light on)
