Thanks for the info. I was missing 2 points that were not mentioned in any of the numerous guides that I read.
1) (Some of )the older models of the E46 (pre-2000) may have the OBD II - connector (well, mine does does anyway)
2) The OBD connector is contained within a screw cap type casing
I was looking for the open connector under my hood (with the pac-man logo showing). Since I could not find it and noticed the connector on the drivers side I assumed I could use the trip-reset method.
All done now anyways!
