Hi, can anybody give me any advice on a gearbox problem. A couple of weeks back I took off from the lights and heard a warning beep from the dashboard and the car wouldnt change out of 1st gear. I turned the engine off for a few minutes and when I restarted it it seemed to be ok for about 10 minutes until a warning sign of a cog with an exclamation mark appeared on the dash and it stuck in gear again. The car was recovered to a BMW specialist who had it about a week and said the fault was a faulty relay. The car worked great for 3 days but then exactly the same thing happened today. The same warning beep and stuck in 3rd gear. Managed to eventually get it into neutral but now wont go into gear. Getting taken to main dealers tomorrow but wondered if anyone else has had a similar problem?? Thanks

There's a known problem with e46 auto box relays and wiring, let us know the outcome of your trip to the dealers

Hi. the cars a 2003. Dealer has now said the hydraulic pump has an intermittent fault and its a part that cant be replaced so its a whole new gearbox for £3900. Does this sound right. Seems strange that the first garage only changed the relay and it worked great for 4 days if the pumps broken.

    Thanks for any advice

Did the garage change the wiring for the relay? you are supposed to, the wiring kit part number is 126.375.456.66, comes with a modified relay

As far as im aware they never changed the wiring, just put a new relay in. Would that make much difference?? Also if it is the hydraulic pump with the fault then would the M3 SMG pump fit (as one of those may be easier to source).

    Thanks

It's a known problem and BMW recommend a wiring plug change so must be a good reason for it, don't know about the SMG pump, I'd say no
