    Morning all
going to be fitting my Garmin Sat Nav today and want to hard wire the power source from the right hand side of the dash. Has anyone done this and can recommend a live on ignition power source I can use on the right hand side of the dash. The main fuse box is on the other side and I would prefer not to have wires from these if possible.
On the panel below the steering wheel there is a unit mounted roughly in the middle with a grill to the front what is this? As it has a live source on ignition.

Would rather have this hard wired, I hate having plugs sticking out of the ciggie lighter and wires draped over the dash etc.
    Any guidance appreciated
    Cheers

glync, sorry for delay in posting a reply.

The best way to find the feed you are looking for is to check with a light tester or multi-meter.

You should find plenty of sources to feed from

The ignition switch wires will have the switch live you are looking for.
Also can you take a picture of the unit as I can't picture it

    Thanks chaps
Finished the job yesterday morning, used a meter/tester and the item in question had a live source on ignition so I have run a fused supply from it.
I'll try a get a picture of it when I have a mo.
It is mounted on the panel under the dash towards the pedals after the storage box. All seems to work fine makes a nice neat job of the sat nav with no wires trailing everywhere.

Now when it stops raining I need to have a look at this headlight warning lamp. I suspect a dodgy sidelight. I noticed in the filling station the other day the side light was out and the indicator light was glowing. Later it was back on ... I read on another thread this is a common fault ..

On my car, there is something similar to what you are describing, but this grill bit is a flap to the secondary OBC II connector. As Ron says, piccie would help.

Cars have always been my weakness, I bought the XK earlier this year for a change as I had four years of Mercs and two E55's. I do miss that sometimes but the XK is a belting motor so different from the previous Jags
The BM I bought to keep the miles off the XK as I travel a fair bit for work, Common sense said get a diesel but they don't float my boat and this 330 is an abolute minter. Westy is off the road at the moment as I have all the bits ready to convert it to full engine management and Fuel injection ...Plus this years weather hasn't really been Westy friendly!
Mrs C keeps nagging me to sell it but I keep putting it off .."wrong season now dear"

Managed to sort the headlight warning problem too
Been messing with the sidelight holder which is one of those nasty push in things . Like Xmas tree lights!! (be doing them next )
bent the contacts back tighter and this seems to have made a better connection time will tell

The part under the steering wheel sounds like the warning gong/temp sensor,(I can hear it)

Does it look like this #2? http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...89&hg=65&fg=70
