I believe with his being a manual it should have only a electric fan

This is for the E46 cooling fan

    E46:
The electric fan is activated by means of a power output stage directly on the fan motor. The motor control unit activates this power output stage by means of a square-wave signal with duty factors (variable pulse width) between 10 and 90 % thus controlling the various speeds of the electric fan. Pulse duty factors less than 5 % and greater than 95 % do not trigger activation but rather they are used for fault detection purposes. The power output stage features its own positive and ground supply.

The fan speed is influenced by the coolant temperature at the radiator outlet and the pressure in the air conditioning system. The fan speed is reduced as the vehicle speed increases.

The electric fan is driven at maximum speed in the event of a fault in the coolant temperature sensor at the radiator outlet

Is the air con working ok?Maybe you should get the codes read by a BMW specialist for peace of mind.

Thanks for the information gildersol. The air-con seems to be working fine. I have not checked this fan properly yet but I will do over the next few days to see if it is definitely running. Is this air con / coolant fan controlled from a relay? If so where is it located?
    Thanks.

As mentioned earlier, if you have just one fan then it is not controlled by a relay. The coolant outlet temp sensor (at the outlet of the radiator) sends a signal to the DME (ecu) which then controls the speed of the fan.
    Have you checked fuse 37?
I'm not sure if we're on the right track here

It could be the aux fan is the condensor fan ? Does the fan come on when you put the AC on , its called a pusher fan on OEM

I dont know but there should be a realy for that unless it is internal in the control unit ( Im clutching at straws but it is a quick check to see if the fan comes on when you ask for AC

Hi, Thanks everyone for all your ideas but I don't seem to be getting anywhere. I have checked today and the pusher fan runs when the air-con is on. I cant actually see it so not sure how many fans there are in the plastic housing, I will take it to bits at the weekend and have a more thorough check. Also fuse 37 is fine.

Does anyone know where I can find a wiring diagram of all the cars electrics? I have a Haynes manual for the petrol model but I don't find their wiring diagrams much good.

Also if I can't find anything wrong and the error code is still there would the dealers ODB software show any more then I already know? Or would I just be paying them to tell me what I already know.

Maybe if there's a code stored but you're not having any probs then it just needs reset.

    I've pm'd you

Thanks gildersol. I have tried to reset the code but it comes back every time. I will see if I can figure anything out from the wiring diagrams. I might try ringing the dealer tomorrow, they will probably want me to bring it in for a full diagnostic but il try them anyway.

Hi, I'm struggling to find what is causing this error code. I took the fan to bits behind the radiator and there is only 1 fan, everything seems to be OK. I can't find the pusher fan, is it at the front of the engine near the radiator? The fan I looked at was no.1 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...42&hg=17&fg=05
